sick

So, it's official: I'm sick!

The irony is 1) I'm the only sick person in my house and 2) I'm a pretty big germophobe. How frustrating!

I keep Purell (or the generic equivalent) on my kitchen counter. Any time I'm handling raw meat, I end up washing my hands something like every five minutes.

Of course, I have been doing a lot of networking, and so I've been shaking a lot of hands. Perhaps that did it. My last meeting with people was on Sunday so... dang it!

Anyway, I'm attacking this with as much gusto as I can muster. Here's my treatment plan.

Chicken soup/stock: I am lucky that I have about four cups of chicken stock in the fridge right now for me to drink. I will likely be throwing some of my reserved chicken back pieces in the crock pot today so that I'll have a fresh batch for tomorrow.

Chicken stock is full of vitamins and minerals, and it is a natural decongestant. Pretty great.

Coconut oil and/or milk: After a big warm cup of stock this morning, I am having my morning coffee with a generous amount of coconut milk. Coconut has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties -- all very important in fighting off a cold.

Vitamin D: I haven't kept up with my vitamin D supplementation as much as I should have. Part of it was due to not being able to find an SCD legal vitamin D supplement for a while, and part of it was due to me getting quite a lot of sun exposure last week. However, I've decided that for every day I'm sick, I'll be taking 6,000 IUs. Here's the link to my blog post about vitamin D and influenza.

If any of you have some good links or remedies to share, please do! For now, I'm just going to veg out while I drink my coffee. :)

I am so sorry to hear you are sick. My time tested and proven remedy is sleep. Sleep as much as you can, I know with kids it is hard but it works! Good luck...

Hi Susan, Do you make your own coconut milk or do you buy it? If you buy it, which brand is SCD legal?
I am sorry that you are sick and hope that you are feeling better soon.

Thank you to both of you. I did manage to take a nap today for about an hour!

The coconut milk I usually use is the brand carried by Trader Joes. It is a light coconut milk but it still tastes good and is legal.

There are other legal brands but I can find the TJ's one consistently.

I am also considering mixing up my own from the coconut cream sold by Tropical Traditions (tropicaltraditions.com).

Thanks to you both! :)

Susan

This is a wonderful link for safe food based flu fighters...
I Hope you are feeling better.
My son swears by flu soup-
onions, shallots, garlic,celery, kale,
tomatoes, sweet peppers, tomatoes if we have it, and then freshly minced sweet red peppers, onions, and cilantro/parsley on the top

It works!

I also make coconut milk from the cream sold in bars by "lets do organic" brand creamed coconut bars
just pure coconut- shelf stable, just mix with warm water...

next time you're sick I'd recommend avoiding coffee until you're better - it taxes the adrenals, burdens the liver and is touch to digest. You can drink lots of herb teas instead, that will help with whatever ailment you have. ginger tea is great for warming you up when you're ill to help fight those nasty bugs off.

Found you searching SCD and Tropical Traditions... So the coconut cream is legal? It looked legal to me even if it wasn't specifically stated so on pecanbread (where I'm getting most of my info). I'm fairly sure there are 'legal' things that aren't listed on the website, though, though hard to figure out for sure.

Hi Cara,

I think the coconut cream is legal. I do intend to try it; just haven't gotten up the cash to order it yet!
